Classification of Silver
| Name/Label | silver content | Features and Applications |
| 999 / S999 | ≥ 99.9% | Very soft, prone to deformation and leaving marks. Not suitable for delicate jewelry, but is often used for traditional silverware, silver bars, and bracelets. |
| 990 / S990 | ≥ 99.0% | It is equally soft and has a property similar to that of 999 silver. It is the traditional kind of "pure silver". |
| 925 / S925 (International Standard Silver) | 92.5% | The absolute mainstream of modern jewelry. By adding 7.5% of copper (or other metals), the hardness and toughness are greatly enhanced, enabling it to handle complex designs and gemstone inlays. Most of the fashionable silver jewelry you purchase is 925 silver. |
| 800 / S800 | 80.0% | It has a higher hardness and a slightly yellowish color. It is mostly used for old-fashioned silverware or in specific regions for jewelry. |
Why do silver jewelry turn black? (Scientific principle)
This is the inherent property of silver, not a quality issue.
The main cause: Sulfuration. Silver reacts with the trace amount of hydrogen sulfide in the air to form black silver sulfide.
Accelerating factors: Sweat (containing sulfur), hot springs (sulfur), cosmetics, perfumes, certain foods (such as eggs) etc. can all accelerate this process.
The oxidation of silver is reversible! It can be easily restored to its luster by the following methods:
Professional tool: Use a silver polishing cloth (containing polishing powder) to gently wipe.
Mild chemical method: Soak in a solution made with tin foil, baking soda and hot water.
Ultrasonic cleaning: Highly effective for plain jewelry.
Purchase and Maintenance Guidelines
Identify the mark: When purchasing, look for the "S925" or "925" mark, as this indicates quality assurance.
First choice: Rhodium plating. For daily wear, choose 925 sterling silver plated with white gold, which can maintain a bright white color for a long time and reduce the hassle of maintenance.
Correct understanding of the names: Appreciate the styles of "Tai Silver" and "Miao Silver", but be aware of their material nature. Purchase them based on reasonable expectations.
Careful maintenance:
Last to put on, first to take off: Put on makeup and apply perfume before wearing, and take off jewelry after returning home.
Stay away from chemicals: Avoid contact with detergent, body wash, mineral water, and swimming pool water.
Sealed storage: When not in use, wrap it in a soft cloth and place it in a sealed bag to minimize contact with air.
